Scheduling Delivery

When to Order Firewood: A Seasonal Guide for Chester County Homeowners

Firewood is one of the few home essentials where timing your purchase matters almost as much as what you buy. Order too late in the season, and even good wood may not have had enough time to finish seasoning before you need it. Order at the right time, and you get better selection, more flexible delivery scheduling, and wood that’s genuinely ready to burn efficiently once temperatures drop across Chester County.

Late Summer: The Best Time to Buy

If you’re organized enough to think about firewood in July or August, you’re in the best possible position. Wood purchased in late summer has months to continue drying before you’ll actually need it, delivery schedules are wide open since most people aren’t thinking about firewood yet, and you’re less likely to run into supply shortages that can crop up once cold weather actually arrives. This is also typically when pricing is most favorable, before the seasonal demand spike pushes prices up.

Early Fall: Still a Strong Window

September and early October remain a solid time to order. Wood bought now still has a reasonable stretch of milder weather to finish seasoning, and delivery scheduling is generally easier than it will be once the first genuinely cold nights hit and everyone remembers they need wood at the same time. This is also a natural window to combine a firewood order with other fall property work — clearing beds, refreshing mulch, or prepping outdoor spaces for the season — since a single delivery trip can often cover multiple materials.

Late Fall: The Rush Begins

By November, firewood demand picks up sharply across the region. Delivery windows fill faster, and while well-seasoned wood is still very much available, the margin for error shrinks — wood ordered this late has had less time to dry further if it wasn’t already fully seasoned when it was cut and split. If you’re ordering in this window, it’s worth confirming moisture content directly rather than assuming “seasoned” means the same thing across every supplier, a topic we cover in more detail in our post on seasoned vs. green firewood.

Winter: Reactive Ordering

Ordering firewood in the middle of winter usually means one of two things: you’re restocking a supply that’s running lower than expected, or you didn’t plan ahead and need wood now. Both are completely manageable — we deliver firewood throughout the season — but this is the least flexible window in terms of scheduling, and it’s worth erring toward ordering a bit more than the bare minimum so you’re not making repeat calls during the coldest, busiest stretch of the year.

How Much to Order, and When

Timing and quantity go hand in hand. If you’re ordering early in the season, it often makes sense to buy your full expected amount for the winter in one delivery, since you have time on your side and it simplifies planning. If you’re ordering later, some homeowners prefer to order a partial amount to get through the immediate cold stretch and schedule a second delivery mid-winter, particularly if storage space is limited. Our guide to cords, face cords, and ricks can help you estimate how much space and budget a full season’s supply requires.

Storage Readiness Matters Too

Ordering early only pays off if your wood is stored properly once it arrives. Wood stacked directly on wet ground or left fully wrapped in a tarp can lose the benefit of an early order fairly quickly. Our firewood storage guide covers how to stack and cover a delivery so it continues seasoning properly rather than reabsorbing moisture.

Chester County Weather Patterns Worth Planning Around

Chester County winters bring a mix of genuinely cold stretches and milder in-between weeks, which means firewood usage tends to spike unevenly rather than at a steady rate through the season. Homeowners who track their own burn rate through a first season — how many nights they typically burn a fire, and roughly how much wood that uses — are usually in a much better position to time their second season’s order accurately, rather than guessing each year.
